Underfloor Heating Cost
When your planning any project usually the first hurdle to overcome is the costing and finding out if the project is a financially viable option. Underfloor heating sounds like an expensive option. But is it really?? Read on to find out more about the true Underfloor Heating Cost!
I very recently took the plunge and installed underfloor heating three rooms of my property. Bedroom, Living Room, and Kitchen. Needless to say I am very happy with the results, but what about the underfloor heating cost? Was it worth it? (find out more about my project here)
Underfloor heating is a recently new addition to the plethora of options for a home owner to heat their property. However (fun fact here!) it was actually first used by the Romans to stream heated air beneath their floors to heat their properties.
This being said traditional modern day methods have either used a gas heated boiler to provide hot water to pump around a central heating system in your home, Or have used electric wire heated through current to heat your home. However while a proven system it is far from perfect.
The two types of underfloor heating that are available are electric and water heated systems. Electric systems only require a electrician to install (whereas water based systems will required a qualified plumber and usually a electrician. The main benefits both of these systems provide is even heat distribution, and the feeling of warm toes and a cooler head. (This by the way is scientifically proven to be the most satisfying temperature distribution for human comfort). Needless to say the lowest Underfloor heating cost is electric. (dont worry we will be getting more to the underfloor heating cost bit next)
The visual and spaces saving benefits are also something that is overlooked often. No great big white radiators cluttering the lines of your room up. I’m sure that radiators can’t be very good feng shui eh! These are all factors when considering the overall underfloor heating cost.
So sounds great, but lets get to the…
Real Truth About Underfloor Heating Cost
The main factor when considering the cost of my heating system project was efficiency. Sure it may (or may not) cost more initially than traditional heating methods. But the efficiency of underfloor heating is UNPARRALLED.
After installation by a professional, it is not uncommon to see between a 20% – 40% saving on your annual heating bills when compared to a traditional central heating system. (Trust me, it’s VERY satisfying seeing my bills now – how many times have you heard someone say that!)
What about the underfloor heating running costs?
As we are all aware the cost of anything these days is not just about the finance but also the impact our decisions will make on the environment. Underfloor heating systems have a highly increased efficiency and therefore a highly reduced c02 output. These systems can even be integrated with underground heat pumps and solar panels to provide a maximum green heat for your house! (Big hugs for the environment!) And we all know a greener boiler, means lower underfloor heating running costs.
Start up cost?
Admittedly the start up (or installation) underfloor heating cost is greater than traditional central heating options due to the nature of underfloor heating.
This is mainly because obviously to get under the floor you have to take up the floor! (Sounds messy but a professional will leave things just as they found them!)
However, this is not always the case. Getting an extension? Building a new house? Then the start up costs that are increased by underfloor heating are negated by the fact the floor is yet to be laid! Combine the two projects and save big time! Ask your contractors about this option if your planning one of these options.
Numbers? Underfloor heating on average initially can cost around an extra $700-$1500 ish for a similar level central heating solution. However shopping around online will find you several great deals. (PRO TIP: You can purchase your system online for much cheaper than your local plumber or electrician will sell it to you – then just hire someone to install it
Underfloor Heating Costs Conclusions
Your obviously excited about underfloor heating options or you wouldn’t be here. The costs of a start up are larger; there is no getting around it.
BUT! With the savings I’m making on my energy bills, I estimate 5 years and it will have paid for its self. Not to mention the added value it has added to my house when I decide move. (Yes that’s right; in the end you will actually make a profit from an underfloor heating system.)
My recommendations.. If you can take the initial cost increase without it being a major burden. Take the plunge; it’s basically better, greener, more efficient, and cheaper in the long term. So really, dont worry about the underfloor heating cost.
